Well, fall practice has begun! Tryouts are in full swing and the group of about fifty hopefuls is as talented as ever. After losing eight very talented seniors, Coach Depew has brought in an equally promising freshmen class that is highlighted by excellent pitching. This past Sunday the Bison had a strong showing in their first fall scrimmage, which was against Lock Haven University. Strong pitching performances came from Kevin McDowell('01), Matt Potalivo('00), and Ed Soley('00). Look for further updates on fall practice coming in the next few weeks.

WELCOME BACK!! Bucknell looks to repeat last year's 30 win season on Tuesday when Fall practice will begin for the Bison. The team looks strong, but the Bison will have to fill some holes if they hope to challenge Navy, last year's Patriot League Champs, for the title in 1999. They lost possibly the greatest class in BU baseball history in 1998. However, Coach Depew feels good about the team again. With All-Patriot Leaguers such as Eric Junge and Matt Potalivo on the mound, the team could be contenders again.....In other news, Last year's League Pitcher of the Year, Mike Anders just completed his first season pitching for a team in the Atlantic Independant League. Mike not only held his own in one of the best independant leagues in the country, he had an ERA under 3.00. Mike plans on playing again next year for the same team, and hopes to get picked up in the 1999 draft next June.......Dave Apollon will be playing this year for Rider University while getting an MBA. Bucknell's second baseman for the last 3 years had an extra year of elliibility left since he tore ligaments in his wrist during 1995.

Potalivo chosen as Academic All-American Matt Potalivo was selected to the 1998 District II Academic All-American Team this past weekend. Matt had a great season which included a 3.48 ERA, a 2-1 record, and 24 Ks in 31 innings. Matt also exceled in the classroom with one of the highest GPAs on the team. |

Bison Get Revenge On Army But Fall To Navy For Title
The Bison were unable to capture their second Patroit League crown in
three years as they fell to Navy this past weekend. The weekend started
off well as Mike Anders shut down Army for his record 21st career win. Led
by sophomore Frank Fresconi, the Bison offense exploded for 9 runs in three
innings to beat Army 9-1 and revenge their playoff loss from 1997. Against
Navy however, the Bison collected that amount of runs in two games. The
back to back losses against Navy ended one of the best seasons in Bucknell
history.
In 1998 the team tied or broke over twenty records. For the third consecutive
year they broke the season wins record. Also, the Class of 1998 ended up
with 99 career wins, the most ever. Both the offense and pitching for Bucknell
had a lot to be proud of this season. The Bison were not shut out one time
the whole year and currently have the second longest streak of games without
being shutout ever (53, the record is 54). As for the pitchers, their combined
ERA was the best in 7 years at 4.77.
5/1/98

(Article by Bob Behler) The team closed out the regular season by recording its 30th win, an 8-7 decision against Cornell in the first game of a doubleheader. The Big Red won the nightcap, 6-5. The win closes out Bucknell's winningest regular season at 30-15. The Bison senior class has currently won 98 games in its four years. Senior secondbaseman Dave Apollon, with three stolen bases on the day, set the Bucknell career stolen base mark. With 26 this season, Apollon now has 59 for his career, one better than the 58 swiped by Ted Aceto (1986-89).
Bucknell scored early in the first game, picking up two in the first inning on Tyler Prout's two-run single, and scored five more in the third, highlighted by Mike Macneely's RBI triple. Teagan Campbell (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs in three innings. Brad Gething pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn his first save.
In the second game, Mike Nemeth, a little used reserve for the Big Red, had his first hit of the season, a double to lead off the sixth inning. He later scored the eventual winning run to break a 5-5 tie on Bill Walkenbach's sacrifice fly. Reliever Nick Leopardi was the winner for Cornell. Ken Corcoran, the third of four Bison hurlers took the loss. Secondbaseman Chris Herron was three for four with three RBI for the Bison.
Bucknell next plays in the Patriot League Tournament against Army Saturday
at noon at Navy in Annapolis, MD. Unfortunetly, the Bison may be short-handed
this weekend because of some key injuries including
a sprained knee to star center-fielder Mike McCarthy. He will be out for
the rest of the season unless the Bison make the play-in series.

COMEBACK KIDS DO IT AGAIN!!
Bison sweep DH from Lehigh, clinch second place
Bucknell scored seven times in the last four innings to overcome a 6-0 deficit and sweep the doubleheader vs Lehigh. The Bison were down 6-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh. After Dave Apollon walked, Mike Macneely got him over to second with a ground out. Then, after a wild pitch moved Apollon over to third and Joe D'Orazio walked with one out, Frank Fresconi beat out a double-play ball to enable Apollon to tie the game. With two outs Lehigh tried to pick off pinch-runner Rick Ciccione and threw the ball away. This allowed him to get to second. Finally, Senior Ben Sauers hit a 1-2 fastball over the shortstop's head for the game winner.
In the first game Bucknell scored early and often. After Ian Joseph and
Mike McCarthy singled, Dave Apollon doubled off the left field wall to score
them both. Then after Apollon advanced to third on a wild pitch, Mike MacNeely
sacrificed him in with a flyball to center. D'Orazio and Fresconi followed
with hits to make it 4-0. Eric Junge went the distance as the Bison won
6-4.
For the day, Frank Fresconi finished with three hits and three RBIs.
The wins clinch second place for the Patriot League Tournament this weekend
at Navy. The Bison will play Army in the first playoff game.
Tomorrow the team plays Cornell and will go for 30 wins for the first time
ever.

BISON GET A DISAPPOINTING SPLIT WITH LEHIGH
Sunday's Double-Header Rained-out--Rescheduled Monday at 1pm
Bucknell came away with one win on Saturday, but they were not the least
bit happy. In the second game they had a 3-1 lead in the final inning and
blew it. Three hits off of reliever Matt Potalivo and a costly two run error
with two outs gave Lehigh a 4-3 win. It looked as if the Bison would run
away with the second game in the beginning. After Ian Joseph and Mike McCarthy
singled in the first inning, Dave Apollon hit his eighth triple of the year
to give the team a 2-0 lead. Mike MacNeely then followed with a sac fly
to make it 3-0. However, the Bison picked up just 4 more hits the rest of
the game and let the game slip away. On the bright side, Apollon's two RBIs
in the game gave him a school record 46 RBIs for the season. Also, the run
he scored on MacNeely's sac fly gave him a school record 117 runs scored
for his career.
In the opener, Bucknell's Joe D'Orazio was the difference. Joe went 3 for
3 with two doubles, a homerun, and 4 RBIs. The Bison coasted to a 8-4 win.
The homerun was his fifth of the year and tenth of his career.Mike MacNeely
and Dave Apollon also picked up two hits for the Bison. Mike Anders went
the distance for Bucknell. He allowed three earned runs while striking out
seven and walking just one. The win is his seventh of the year, and twentieth
of his career.
4/25/98
Bucknell Pulls Out A Record 26th Win!
The 1998 Bucknell baseball team set the record
for wins in a season with 26, as they rallied for three runs in the bottom
of the seventh and a 10-9 win over Mount St. Mary's. Joe D'Orazio tripled
in two to tie the game, and then scored the eventual game-winner on Frank
Fresconi's sacrifice fly. Fresconi was two for three on the day with three
RBIs. Dave Apollon, Mike MacNeely, and Tyler Prout also all had two hits
for the Bison.
Brad Gething earned his first collegiate win, giving up one earned run on
five hits in three and two-thirds innings. Matt Potalivo picked up his third
save by pitching two scoreless innings and striking out two.
The Bison will play their final regular season Patriot League games this
weekend against Lehigh. Doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday will start
at 12PM.

Bison Tie All-Time Win Record!!
Senior Captain David Apollon |
Dave Apollon's 2 Homeruns Lift Bucknell Over Shippensburg Bucknell recorded its 25th win of the season by beating Shippensburg
11-7. The Bison trailed 6-2 after five innings, but used a two run fifth,
a two run sixth, and a five run eighth inning to pull it out. Dave Apollon
brought the Bison to within two runs in the fifth inning with his seventh
homer of the year . Then in the sixth inning, Apollon singled in the tying
run after Mike McCarthy had singled in a run. In the eighth inning, Apollon
hit his eighth homerun of the year, a three run shot, following another
RBI single by McCarthy. That combined with a Mike MacNeely solo homerun
put the game out of reach. Ian Joseph, Mike MacNeely, and Mike McCarthy
all had two hits for the Bison while Apollon collected three. |
4/21/98
Bucknell can tie the all-time record for wins in a season today if they can beat Shippensburg.
Bucknell's offense has struggled of late. In the last 10 games they have scored more than 7 runs just once.
Kevin McDowell hsa the fifth best ERA in the nation right now. His 1.49 ERA is also the lowest in the Patriot League.
4/20/98
BISON SINK NAVY TWICE!
Bucknell senior secondbaseman Dave Apollon drilled a two-out single off
over the glove of Navy secondbaseman Scott Vane to drive in two runs in
the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Bison a 7-6 win in the nightcap,
and a sweep of a doubleheader from Navy. The Bison won the opener, 4-3.
In the opener, Kevin McDowell and Matt Potalivo combined for the win and
the save. McDowell (6-1) went 6 and 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs
on just two hits. Potalivo came in to strikeout pinch-hitter Tony Moore
with the bases loaded to end the game and record his second save of the
season. Ian Joseph had 2 singles to drive in two runs.
In the nightcap, Joe D'orazio and Ben Sauers each had three hits and Tyler
Prout and Ian Joseph had two hits each. Navy broke open a 4-4 tie in the
top of the 10th by scoring twice with the benefit of four walks in the inning.
The Bison answered with three in the bottom half of the inning to win the
game, 7-6. Joe D'Orazio led off with a double to centerfield and advanced
to third on a Sauers single. After pinch-hitter Frank Fresconi lined out,
Ken Corcoran was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Joseph then singled in
his third run of the day to bring Bucknell within one at 6-5. After Mike
McCarthy struck out for the second out, Apollon picked up his first hit
of the weekend to win the game for the Bison in dramatic fashion. Eric Junge
picked up his sixth win for the Bison.
4/19/98
SUNDAY'S DH RAINED-OUT
The second double-header with Navy scheduled for today was rained out and will be made up tomorrow, April 20th at 1pm. Bucknell could not catch a break on Saturday as they lost both games to Navy. The first score was 4-3, and the second 8-4. The offense just did not get the key hits in clutch situations, and that was the difference. Tyler Prout, Ian Joseph, and Ben Sauers all had two hits for Bucknell. The Bison are now scheduled to play 10 games in the next 9 days. All the games are home games.
4/18/98
BISON ROLL OVER BLOOMSBURG,
PREPARE FOR STRETCH RUN
Bucknell took care of business on Thursday, beating Bloomsburg 9-3. Mike McCarthy was the hitting star going 3 for 4 with a homerun, a triple, and 2 stolen bases. Tyler Prout also had a good game. After coming to the field late, he hit a pinch-hit homerun to give the Bison the lead for good. Mike Macneely added two insurance runs in the eighth inning with another two run homerun. Now the important part of the schedule begins for Bucknell. They will play eight of their next ten games against top Patriot League opponents to determine where they will end up in the post-season. If Bucknell can take 3 of 4 from Navy this weekend, they will move into first place in the league.
4/16/98
CLUTCH!!
That one word defined the Bisons' play on Sunday against
Holy Cross. Needing two wins to complete a 4 game sweep of Holy Cross and
set up a series for first place next week versus Navy, Bucknell came through.
Senior captain Dave Apollon led the way, going 5 for 6 on Sunday with a
homerun, two triples, and two doubles.
In the first game, Eric Junge, now 5-0, won his third straight as a starter.
He went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits. Junge walked no one
and struck out five. After Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the first on back
to back doubles, the Bison answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo
homerun by Dave Apollon. The game remained that way until the sixth inning
when Mike McCarthy hit his third homerun of the year to give Bucknell a
2-1 lead. They would add one more insurance run and go on to win 3-1.
The second game was one of the greatest comebacks in years
for the Bison. After trailing 5-2 in the last inning, the team scored
four 2 out runs to win the game 6-5!! Frank Fresconi lead off the inning
with a base hit. Then after a strikeout, pinch hitter Rick Ciccione walked;
However, after the next batter lined out to left field, the team was down
to their last out. That is when the clutch hitting began. Bucknell was determined
to pull this game away from Holy Cross. Mike McCarthy tripled in two runners,
then Dave Apollon hit a 2-2 fastball off the top of the center field fence
for another triple to tie the game, and finally, Joe D'Orazio singled him
in for the winner.
The wins put Bucknell at 21-11 overall and 8-4 in the Patriot League. They
are just two games behind Navy, who are 10-2, for first place in the league.
If the Bison can win 3 of 4 next weekend vs. Navy they will be in first
place. Before that, the team will play a single game with Bloomsberg on
Thursday.
| Congrats to Mike Anders for breaking the all-time wins record at Bucknell!! |
4/14/98
Mike Anders tied Ken Durr ('79-'82) for most games pitched in a career at Bucknell with 47. During his career, he has allowed only 48 walks while striking out 139 batters. That is nearly a 3 to 1 ratio!
The Bison pitchers lead the Patriot League in ERA (4.76), wins (21), and strikeouts (190).
4/11/98
BISON PITCHERS SHUT-DOWN HOLY CROSS
Once again, the Bison pitchers came through as the Bison
swept a double-header over Holy Cross, 5-1 and 1-0. Senior righthander Mike
Anders had a complete game victory in the opener that ran his season record
up to 5-2 and gave him 18 wins for his career, breaking the school record.
Don Richards ('54-'56) and Kurt Waldner ('90-'93) had shared the previous
mark with 17 wins. Anders allowed only one run on seven hits over seven
innings while striking out eight. The offense in the first game was led
by roomates Ken Corcoran and Dave Apollon,. Ken hit a two run double in
the second inning. Then Dave Apollon hit his fifth homerun of the year to
lead off the third inning. Also, Ben Sauers collected three base-hits in
the first game.
In the second game, Kevin McDowell and Matt Potalivo combined for a one
hit shutout. It was the Bison's third shutout of the year, the most since
they had three shutouts in 1993. Bucknell shutout six opponents in 1975.
McDowell, now 5-1, went 6 and a third innings allowing up a weak single
down the first base line for Holy Cross's only hit. He walked seven and
struckout seven. Bucknell scored the game's only run in the first inning,
as Dave Apollon doubled and scored on Joe D'orazio's single.
Bucknell is now 19-11 and 6-4 in the Patriot League. Tomorrow's Easter Sunday
double-header with Holy Cross will start at 1:30pm.
4/10/98
IN THE HUNT!
After Army lost two games to Holy Cross last weekend, the Bison moved to within one game of second, and two games of first. This weekend the top two seeds will face each other, so if the Bison can win three or four games against Holy Cross they should be able to gain some more ground in the standings. Next weekend, Bucknell will host Navy which could be a battle for first place in the league.
4/8/98
The double-header with St. Bonaventure was called off Wed. morning by
the St. Bonaventure coach due to a 70% chance of rain. Although the rain
may not have arrived until late, the coach probably did not want to face
the Bison's line-up for fear of accumulating two more losses. Bucknell's
2 games with Holy Cross on Thursday look like they will not be played either;
however, these games will be rescheduled for sometime this weekend. Due
to the weather, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, this weekend's schedule is
still up in the air.
4/6/98
Bucknell moved back up to .500 in the Patriot League with three wins over Lafayette this weekend. Eric Junge, Mike Anders, and Kevin McDowell all pitched complete games for the Bison. Offensively, Joe D'Orazio, Tyler Prout, and Mike MacNeely lead the way with 12 RBIs between the three of them. The weather was brutal during the weekend. Thirty MPH wind gusts moved fly balls forty to fifty feet in the air. Bucknell plays a double-header at St. Bonaventure on Wed. before resuming league play on Thursday with Holy Cross at home.

"Bucknell Baseball Players Among Patriot League
Leaders"
(From Bucknell Sports Information)
Lewisburg, PA --- Bucknell's "A-Team", a pair of seniors, secondbaseman
Dave Apollon and pitcher Mike Anders each lead the Patriot League in
seven categories this season. Apollon, the Player of the Week two weeks
ago, is tops in hits (33), runs scored (21), runs batted in (28), triples
(4), total bases (14 of 15). He shares the league lead in homeruns with
teammate Joe D'Orazio at four. Apollon has nine hits in his last twenty
at bats, for a .450 batting average, and has nine RBI in that time period.
Mike Anders, the Pitcher of the Week this past week, leads the league in
ERA (2.74), innings pitched (46), strikeouts (36), and has the fewest walks
per nine innings (.98). He shares the top spot in shutouts (1), complete
games (5), and wins (3). Anders three wins equals that of his teammates
Kevin McDowell and Eric Junge. He is just one win away from tying the school
record for career wins with 17 which is held by Don Richards ('54-'56).
Junior Eric Junge leads the Patriot League in saves with three.
4/1/98
BISON GRAB ONE FROM PENN STATE
Bucknell bounced back from this past Sunday's
losses with a big win against Penn State. Eric Junge allowed just three
earned runs and pitched his first complete game of his career as Bucknell
won 10-5 in the first game. Ken Corcoran led the way on the offensive side.
He roped two doubles in three plate appearances. He also scored twice and
drove in three. Ben Sauers, Frank Fresconi. Mike McCarthy, and Dave Apollon
also had two hits a piece. After Penn State got three in the top of the
third inning, Bucknell answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning
on a two out bases loaded single by Dave Apollon. Then in the forth, the
Bison went ahead for good on a two run double by Corcoran.
In the second game, the Penn State hitters collected thirteen runs on twelve
hits to win 13-2. Bucknell's offense was led by Rick Ciccione who hit his
first homerun of the year. Dan O'brien, Mike McCarthy, and Mike Ritz also
had hits in the game. Bucknell gets three days off before heading to Lafayette
this weekend.

BISON OFFENSE STRUGGLES AT ARMY
To say "it was just one of those weekends" would be a huge
understatement for the Bucknell baseball team. All weekend long they tried
hopelessly to find that big inning to put them over the top. However, every
time they had runners on, it seemed like the next guy up would hit a laser
right at an Army fielder. The Bison were able to win the first game of the
series behind great pitching by Mike Anders and some clutch hits. Both David
Apollon and Frank Fresconi each had two RBI base-hits to lead the team to
a 5-0 win. In the game, Mike Anders allowed just five cadet hits. In the
second game on Saturday, the Bison pitchers made two mistakes to Army clean-up
hitter Mike Scholetti. He hit both hanging curveballs over the fence in
left to give Army a 7-5 win. On Sunday, the Bison managed just 13 hits in
the two games. They just could not come up with the big hit when they had
runners in scoring position. Bucknell's heart of the order were a combined
4 for 36 on the weekend, and left 20 men in scoring position. Army scored
all but one of their runs in two innings during the day. In the first game
on Sunday they had a six run inning and won 6-2, and in the second game
they had a four run inning and won 5-4.
Bucknell will play a double-header with Penn State at home on Tuesday, March
31 before they go to Lafayette next weekend.
The 5-0 shutout win at Army on Saturday was the Bison's first in two
years. In the game. Mike Anders allowed 0 runners to third base, and just
3 runners to second base.
Mike Anders is just one win away from tying the great Don Richards record
of 17 career wins at Bucknell. Mike recorded his 16th at Army on Saturday
with a 5-0 shutout. The record was set back in 1956.
The Bison have stolen 48 out of 62 bases this year, and are on pace to break last year's record of 85 swipes. 36 of the 48 have been gotten by Dave Apollon, Ian Joseph, and Mike McCarthy.
3/27/98
JOLTEN JOE DOES IT AGAIN!!!
| Like the song says in the second to last verse, Joe D'Orazio came up clutch as usual. His seventh inning two run homerun gave the Bison a 2-1 win against Georgetown. All day long the Bison bats struggled. Through six innings they had just 2 singles. However, after David Apollon tripled with one out in the seventh, Joe hit a 3-1 change-up well over the right field fence and into the parking lot. That would be all the Bison pitchers needed. Matt Potalivo, Ed Soley, Kevin McDowell, Shawn Huss, and Eric Junge all pitched excellent to keep G-town's offense silent.Beside Apollon and D'Orazio's hits, Tyler Prout had two, Ken Corcoran had one, and Ian Joseph also had one. The win moves the Bison to 12-6 as they head to Army this weekend to start league play. | |
3/24/98
Bucknell's Mike Tomko and Matt Potalivo combined for the team's first no-hitter in five years last week vs. Niagra. The last Bucknell pitcher to get a no-hitter was Kurt Waldner on April 3, 1993 against Lafayette. Waldner's no-hitter is the only one since the Patriot League formed in 1991.
![]() |
Bucknell has hit seventeen homeruns through seventeen games. Seven different players have at least one, and six have two or more bombs. |
Coach Depew won his 250th game on March 16th against NE Illinois.
Bucknell has scored 121 runs in their first seventeen games and are on record pace once again. In the previous two years they have broken the runs record.
3/7/98
With the double header sweep today, Coach Depew moves to within 3 wins of his 250th career win as the Bucknell head coach. Depew already has the most wins of any Bison coach!
The Bison pitching staff looks to get even better in the next few weeks. Junior Teagan Campbell and Sophomore Scott Perry have been throwing without pain lately. There is no specific date when they will return, but they should be ready for the start of the league season at the end of March
3/4/98
The Bison were able to squeek out a 7-1 win against Lock Haven because of strong pitching from the staff. Matt Potalivo, Mike Anders, Mike Tomko, Shawn Huss, and Eric Junge allowed just seven hits combined. On the other hand, the Bison hitters continue to struggle. The team only mustered seven hits. The heart of the order has not yet found their groove. Mike McCarthy, David Apollon, Joe D'Orazio, and Tyler Prout are all currently hitting under .275. Mike Macneely and Frank Fresconi each collected two big hits to lead the way.
3/2/98
Bucknell took the opener of the four game series with William and Mary
on Friday afternoon, but they were unable to take another. On Saturday the
team could not get any offense going, and on Sunday it was the pitching
that cost them.
After leaving for W&M on friday morning at 5:30 AM, the Bison may have
been expected to come out of the blocks a little sluggish; however, they
got the lead early and never looked back. A double play in the bottom of
the ninth with the tying run on first gave the Bison a 7-6 win. Saturday
Bucknell hit the ball well, but it always seemed to go right at a W&M
fielder. Mike Anders and Mike Tomko held the Tribe to 4 runs in each of
the two games, but the offense could only muster up one run in the first
game and two in the second. Sunday the bats came around. The Bison scored
two in the first, one in the third, and then four in the fifth on a Ken
Corcoran grand slam. Unfortunetly, W&M caught all the breaks and scored
12 unanswered runs to win 16-7.
2/25/98
|
Bucknell hit four homeruns this past weekend. Last year the team hit fifty homeruns in fifty games. Although this year's team may be just as powerful as last, it will be difficult to up the mark because Bucknell plays a lot more games at their extremely lasrge home field this coming Spring. |
The team tied the record for double plays in a game on Saturday when they got four of them in the first game of the year!! Mike McCarthy doubled off two runners from center field after making a few amazing catches.
2/18/98
The Bison will be going for their third consecutive winning season this spring. The last time that happened was in 1949, 1950, and 1951.
In February, the team lost two of their outfielders, Erich Muzi and Alex McKnight. Both of these men had gotten some time during the 1997 season and looked as if this would have been their breakout years. Fortunetly, Bucknell got some great freshmen outfielders to assist CF Mike McCarthy (jr.) and RF Ken Corcoran (sr.) in the outfield. Brad Gething, Ian Joseph, and Michael Ritz all had exceptional falls, and may get a chance to start in the spring. Ian, a switch hitter from Ohio, may get the nod because of his speed, but both Mike and Brad have cannons.
Mike Anders and Mike Tomko will have large parts in determining the Bison's outcome this year. After brilliant sophomore and junior years they both have become possible aces this coming spring. Mike (pictured left) Anders has been throwing well lately, and he is expected to have a new knuckle ball to add to his arsenal. Mike Tomko (pictured right) has given his arm some rest over the last six months and hopes to come back refreshed.
