| Volcan Masaya, Nicaragua. Masaya is a rare example of a basaltic caldera with explosive eruptions In the fifteenth century Spanish priests declared Masaya "La boca del Infierno" (the mouth of Hell) and planted a cross at the edge of the active crater to exorcise Satan. Sulfer dioxide fumes, such as those seen in the background, dissolved the cross. Santiago Crater (shown here) formed in 1772 and has been active since. |
