Tunnel Beach

One of our favorite spots around Dunedin - our first trip to Tunnel Beach, about 15 minutes from our house (35kb) After walking down through the sheep pasture, you have this marvelous expanse of cliff, sea, and sky (25kb) This land was originally owned by a guy who was frustrated that his kids couldn't actually get down the cliffs to play in the sea (36kb) So he had this tunnel dug! (46kb) On the sea end, you come out into a little cove filled with rocks, seaweed, and a little sand (and on this day, a sleeping seal) (42kb)
The view from the cove (27kb) Looking up to the limestone cliffs (25kb) Depending on the sun, the cliffs changed color constantly, but we did have to watch the tides (26kb) From the cliffs, looking down into the little cove (58kb) Sheep graze right out to the very tip of the cliffs - their droppings were everywhere (17kb)
A constant struggle to keep Joe away from the cliffs (18kb) The sea roared through this opening with every wave (31kb) Joe and Sara could have stayed here all day (34kb) Another place in NZ where you can pretty much wander anywhere you'd like - the liability laws are quite a bit different! (20kb) Looking back toward Dunedin after climbing back up through pastures to the car (22kb)
