Ulva Island

We took a day trip to Ulva Island, in a harbor off the coast of Stewart Island (62kb) We saw our first weka there, then we saw another, and another . . . (82kb) Ulva is a sanctuary where all the rats and stoats and possums have been eliminated - so there are a ton of birds (65kb) No one lives on the island - there are trails all over it (54kb) Lunch at Ulva - hard to get rid of the wekas, who were very interested in everything we did (57kb)
Wonderful trees (99kb) Giant ferns - we spent about 5 hours on the island, walking on all the paths (96kb) We saw a few other people, but mostly we saw birds (35kb) We spent a lot of time like this, looking especially for saddlebacks, which we heard but didn't see (50kb) You go to and from Ulva in little water taxis - another interesting way to travel!
