IS
Literature & News Sites (great
for use on projects, hint, hint...)
Since the field of I.S. changes so rapidly, and often so
unpredictably, any I.S. professional needs to "keep up" with what's
going on. Here are some periodicals that I've found useful through the years.
Until you decide in which area you wish to specialize, I'd recommend you
subscribe to InfoWorld (a weekly
newspaper). Once you start to specialize, you should try these other sources.
These links also make great places to search for articles for your group
projects!
IS/IT Job Hunting Links
More and more companies use the Web to announce jobs, which
makes it incredibly easy and convenient for job seekers. Here are some that
seem potentially useful. Let me know if any pan out.
- Information Week Salary
Survey April, 2001
- IT
Careers for the Class of 2001
- CareerLink: a salary survey and resume building tips site for IT professionals.
- Information Week IT Industry Salary Survey
from 1999
- ISWorld is an organization of both I.S. academics and
professionals. The Career
and Job Hunting Sources on the Net site has links to a bunch of other
sites that list I.S. jobs. Just make sure you scroll down on that page
to find those links.
- Here are four recruiting sites:
- Oakland University, just outside of Detroit, has compiled
a huge list of job hunting sources. It's called The
Definitive Guide To Internet Career Resources
- If you want to look for that really cool adventure, and
get paid for it, visit the International
and Overseas Job Search and Employment Resources site.
- I found this one in the San Jose Mercury News. If you're
aiming at these cities, it's worth a visit. Search
Newspaper Job Postings in Boston, Chicago, LA, NY, San Jose, DC
- When you interview with a company you're really keen
on, you should get as much information about them as possible. Sometimes
the best place is the Investor Relations office at the company (get them
to send you 10-K's and other public information). Or you can go straight
to the Securities and Exchange Commission and use Edgar
their report search engine.
- Every year Computerworld puts out a list of the "Premier 100" organizations to work
for, mostly from the viewpoint of an I.S. professional.
If you come across any other useful sites, please email
the URL to me and I'll put it on the list.
