The Central Pennsylvania Dog Training Club was founded in 1993. It is composed of people interested in general and competetive obedience training for their dogs. Both pure-bred and mixed breed dogs participate in our classes, however, only pure-bred dogs can participate in sanctioned AKC obedience trials.

During the year, the club is involved in various activities. These include basic obedience classes for the general public, sponsoring Canine Good Citizenship testing, evaluation of dogs for Therapy Dog consideration and an annual "Show and Go" in the Spring.

Within the club is a group called The Central Pennsylvania Heelers, which is a member of Therapy dogs International based in Flanders, New Jersey.

The primary objective of the TDI dog and handler is to provide comfort and companionship by sharing the dog with the partients in hospitals, nursing homes, other institutions and wherever else the Therapy dog is needed. This is done in a way that increases emotional well-being, promotes healing and improves the quality of life for the prople being visited and the staff that cares for these people.

Members of the CPDTC visited Camp Spifida recently, demonstrating obedience skills and an agility course.

Many of our club members have certified Therapy dogs and participate in a wide variety of activities around central Pennsylvania including: Visits to nursing homes, churches and other institutions; parades and demonstrations and dog bite prevention presentations. The highlight of some of these presentations is a square dance, where handlers and their dogs perform as a team under the direction of a caller!
