THE SEVENTH ANNUAL IAFFE TEACHING WORKSHOP is dedicated to feminist approaches to assessment, evaluation techniques and strategies. It will be coordinated by Zohreh Emami, Professor of Economics and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Donna Engelmann, Associate Professor of Philosophy, both of Alverno College. Between them, Dr. Emami and Dr. Engelmann have twenty-five years of experience offering workshops and consultations on teaching, curriculum development, assessment of learning and institutional transformation. Professor Mary Hampton of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and Professor Barbara Weins-Tuers who teaches at Penn State-Altoona will join Professors Emami and Engelmann in conducting the workshop.
Those of us who are teaching in US colleges and universities are aware of increased attention to assessing the outcomes of student learning. Often this attention is in the context of program and institutional assessment requirements of governing bodies and accreditation associations in higher education. While dealing with these issues, it is also important to explore approaches to assessment that will better meet the needs of students. Participants in this workshop are asked to build on the good work of teaching and assessing student learning they are already engaged in, by bringing a favorite assignment or project which has assessment elements they would like to develop. They will have an opportunity to share successful strategies. Participants will receive materials they can use in their classrooms and in other arenas where assessment and evaluation are needed.
