CAPSULE

Function:
The capsule is a layer on the outside of the cell wall. Most but not
all bacteria have a capsule. It functions to Attach to surfaces;
protect against phagocytic engulfment, occasionally killing or digestion;
it is a reserve of nutrients or protection against desiccation. The
capsule is usually a polysaccharide; occasionally a polypeptide.
