CELL WALL

Size & Shape:

  • 10 nm thick

Location:

  • surrounding plant cells, bacteria, and fungi

Function:

The cell wall protects the cell against injury and invasion from harmful materials, such as pathogens. The cell wall is composed of the polysaccharide, cellulose, which is arranged in microfibrils that make the barrier rigid and resistant to forces on the cell. The cell wall also mediates cell-cell interactions and acts as the source of signals that alter the activities of the cell.
