CENTRIOLE

Size:

  • 0.2 mm diameter and twice as long

Location:

  • near the Golgi complex in nondividing cells,
at the poles of the cell during division

Function:

Centrioles are made of the protein tubulin and are arranged into nine evenly spaced fibrils, each fibril consisting of three microtubules. They are always found in pairs, usually found perpendicular to each other. Centrioles participate in cell division as mictotubule organizing centers and forming the mitotic spindle when the time comes for the cell to split.
