The Shamokin Creek Restoration Alliance
(SCRA) and the Northumberland County Conservation District (NCCD) received notification
in early August 2002 that three grants were approved. These grants include:
- SCRA and NCCD:
- $454,150 DEP 319 grant for the installation
of a passive Acid Mine Drainage Treatment System at the Corbin Mine Drift
(Scarlift Site 15) along Route 901 in Coal Township. This third treatment
system in the watershed will treat a low-pH, high iron and aluminum discharge
that contributes about 5% of the iron to the entire watershed. Construction
will begin in summer 2005 as soon as utility poles are relocated.
- $64,673 DEP Growing Greener grant
for Acid Mine Drainage Characterization and Treatment Planning at the
Big Mountain AMD Discharges (Scarlift Sites 23-28). Project is nearing
completion.
- $Grant for construction of two diversions
wells at the Big Mountain AMD Discharges (Scarlift Sites 23-28) along
Shamokin Street.
- Northumberland County Planning Commission:
- $75,000 for the assessment of the
Shamokin Creek Watershed which was in conjunction with the SCRA and the
NCCD. This study will build upon the USGS-led
assessment, broadening the scope to include stormwater and agricultral
effects on the watershed. The study, by Kimball and Associates, should
be completed in summer 2005.
