Several citizens have reported seeing fish in Shamokin Creek near Sunbury in recent years.
On October 4, 2000, the US Geological Survey conducted electrofishing in
Carbon Run and at two Shamokin Creek locations. Several species were found
below the USGS gaging station near Shamokin and near the Rt. 61 bridge in Sunbury.
The pH of the Sunbury site was only 4.2 in October 2000, much lower than the
October 1999 sampling round, and fewer species and many fewer fish were found
in October 2000 sampling. Shamokin Creek often experiences frequent fluctuations
in stream water quality, which probably results in fluctuating fish populations.
