A Signal Problem
Problem Signal1P04

Dr. Abner Mallity is taking a trip to Europe.  The country he will be visiting has power at 110v (AC, so the peak is larger than that) and at a frequency of 50 Hz (compared to 60 Hz in the U. S.  He is taking his alarm clock with him.  He needs to get up at 6AM so he can be on the way to his early appointment at 7AM.  He goes to bed at midnight, and just as he is getting into bed he remembers his alarm clock.  He has reset his wristwatch to the local time, so he just sets the alarm clock to midnight, and sets the alarm for 6AM to ring loudly.  How does his appointment go?

A secondary advanced problem buried in this problem is to make an estimate of whether his alarm clock survives until morning.  Some appliances are rated for 50 or 60 Hz so that they can be sold in both Europe and the U. S.  What are the odds that the alarm clock is rated to survive at 50 Hz?  (Choices for the answer regarding odds are none, slim, good and no problem.)
