Espionage is defined as the practice of obtaining secrets from rivals or enemies for military, political, or economic advantage . Spying, as it is more commonly referred to, is a topic that many people have had some kind of exposure too. The types of exposure can range from James Bond movies, spy novels, national security, or a historical context. No matter the exposure, most people have seen a wide variation of spying, espionage, covert operations and technology associated with it all. Spying, called, “the second oldest profession,” has a rich and long history and historical context (Melton, K). Espionage and the technology associated with it have changed considerably throughout the years. However, the role of the human spy and the tools they use is still the backbone of the practice of espionage. The following investigation of this topic includes a brief history and background of espionage, an investigation of types and methods of espionage and the technology involved in it all. Within these topics, the site presents an investigation of spy movies, TV show, and books and their presentation of espionage. I try to reveal some myths and some reality, to show what is real and what is total fiction. Also, much like the mission of the newly constructed, International Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. this project and investigation is an attempt to present a, “realistic understanding intelligence so we can appreciate its role in our society and impact on major world events”(Hagen, S) . |
