Project Eight | |
| The goals of this project are 1) to introduce the prospective teacher to the computer resources available to the biology teacher and student, e.g. resources on the Internet, software programs for the biology classroom, discussion groups, etc., and 2) to begin thinking about methods for effective use of the computer in the classroom. |

| The Internet | Doing It With Less |
Alternatively, a student may choose in Part II to focus on "doing it with less" since school budgets in today's educational environment often restrict what can be done.
Part I:
This project should also be completed as a group. Each group will examine the [Project Eight Resource Page: The Internet] and explore the Internet sites listed there. Also, using your favorite search engine, look for additional useful sites. Choose several areas of interest and search for useful resources. Record your general search schemes and their outcomes. Prepare a list of your newly found sites along with their URLs for distribution to the class. After your study is complete, you should select your "top ten" sites and demonstrate them to the entire class. Include at least several of your newly discovered sites. We will meet in the computer laboratory for this session.
Part II:
Each group should also familiarize yourselves with two examples of instructional software that can be used successfully in the biology classroom. If, after the familiarization process, the software is found to contain significant limitations, these should be noted. Each group should also detail for the entire class some helpful hints regarding how this software can be effectively used in a classroom situation. If this software is commercially produced, a budget detailing its cost needs to be provided. Presentation back to the group should be primarily in the demonstration format; however, helpful written materials may accompany the presentation. We will meet in the computer laboratory for this session.
Alternative Activity:
If you choose to focus on the "Doing It With Less" project, your report back to the entire class should consist of an oral presentation (as well as written materials where appropriate) as to how low cost laboratories can be implemented. Consult the [Project Eight Resource Page: Doing It With Less] to begin your project.
