Design Against Failure
On April 28, 1988 Aloha Flight 243 took off
from Hilo, Hawaii bound for Honolulu. As it reached its flight altitude,
the cockpit crew heard a loud noise and looked back to see that a part
of the passenger roof had blown off of the aircraft. Through the skill
of the crew, the plane was safely landed with only one death. The aircraft
had been designed to sustain major structural failure and survive. The
aircraft's design engineers understood solid mechanics and how to apply
it.
