The HEAD has a spherical shape to function as the ball in the socket of
a human hip. The segment to the right is designed to be implanted within
the leg bone. It has fractured into two pieces after several years of service.
The development of artificial devices for insertion into the human body
has grown rapidly in the last twenty years. Because of the harsh environment
that exists within the human body for many traditional engineering materials
, new ones have been developed that are stronger, lighter and more resistant
to corrosion. Solid mechanics has been used to evaluate these materials
under the loads that the human body exerts. The field that encompasses
this area is called biomechanics.
