We would like to introduce ourselves and talk about why this project was undertaken. The project team included Lisa Domanowski and Keith Donahue and our advisor was Professor Thomas Rich. We are both senior mechanical engineering students at Bucknell University and will graduate soon in May, 2000. We originally gained an interest in this project from Keith, who grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Keith had long term curiosity in The Powder Hole. At the start of the project, we only knew that the site existed, but not the significance of it.
We undertook an independent study with Professor Rich, who has a strong interest in the industrial history of Pennsylvania. Our research plans included a literature search, site visits and a trip to Hagley Museum. Early in the semester, we met Roger Gilbert, who has personal ties to the Powder Hole and provided us with a wealth of information. With his help, we were able to get a lot more accomplished than we originally thought possible.
Our goals for the project were to learn about the site and begin to document the remains and the history for others who have an interest in it.
In just a short time, we were able to uncover the significance of The Powder Hole. There is a great story to be told and a lot of physical artifacts that can be preserved. We hope this webpage reveals a bit of the story of the Powder Hole and can serve to arouse interest in the preservation of the site.
