Fieldtesting

We wanted to gain some insight into what is happening to the snowboard while it is in use. So we instrumented three different snowboards with strain gages and an accelerometer. Strain gages provide an indication of deflection and the accelerometer measures forces and vibrations. A laptop computer carried in a backpack was connected to the sensors with a detachable cable so that we could switch snowboards. Two professional snowboarders performed turning operations on a regular slope and jumps in the half pipe while the computer collected data from the sensors. We filmed all of their actions so that we could synchronize the motion with the sensor data. We collected many sets of data over several days of testing.
