Radio Program "World Tango Music" on WVBU

Wednesdays 12:00-1:00pm
This show is dedicated to the proposition that the Tango ("a sad thought that can be danced") is a music of the people of many countries, originated by the people of Argentina, for the people who seek emotional engagement. I play tangoes by orchestras from around the world. See the show schedule and and you will notice we cover many countries. But I am always looking for new orchestras. If you kn lw orchestras in Australia, China, Mongolia, Africa, drop me an email.

Dance

For the past few years Michelle my partner and I have studied Argentine Tango dancing with Sharon Hillman, Lori Coyle, Lesley Mitchell and Kelly Ray, Gustavo Naviera, Gustavo Benzecry-Saba and Maria Oliviera, Pablo Neivas and Valeria Zunzoni, Pablo Inza and Moira, Osvaldo and Coca, and many other fine teachers.

We would like to develop a Tango commuity in Lewisburg,Pennsylvania. Avantango group performed at the Weis Center for the performing Arts on Dec 1, 2007., and we offered beginner lessons in Spring and Fall 2008. Please contact me if you are interested in learning Tango or helping uild a community.

Paul is working on a project on Tango as a metaphor for managing and organizing.  Tango teaches us the values of leadership, teamwork, simplicity, improvisation, focus, balance, community building, communication, mutual respect, all of which are critical for success in management.

Milonga Music

I have a collection of over 4600 tango tracks organized and ready to roll right off my iPod.  More than 80% are traditional Argentine tangoes, and rest are alternative, neo Tangoes from around the word.

My approach to designing music for Milongas is based on energy and emotions on the dance floor.  I am continually assessing dancers needs, and consulting with dancers as the evening proceeds.  Before a Milonga, if there is opportunity I collect music preferences from some dancers.  I will dance occasionally to keep in touch with the energy on the floor.  During the Milonga I manage all aspects of the music and announcements– content, order, volume, guest announcements, etc. to create a smooth acoustic environment.

I play music in Tandas (fthree or four songs of a musical type) followed by a short Cortina. Often three Tandas of Tango songs are followed with a Tanda of Milonga music.  Or I will play two Tango Tandas, One Vals, followed by a Milonga Tanda.  Several predesigned Tandas representing Early Tangoes, Classical Era Tangoes, Tango Nuevo, and Neo and Alternative Tangoes are available in my play lists.  I try to use Cortinas that are clear as changeover signals but pleasing and themed.  With over 4000 songs to choose from I can create playlists and Tandas on the fly to adjust to the mood of the dancers.  The goal is to keep the dance floor full of energy and emotion. I have a portable 300 Watt system to play the music.
